What is Divi?

What is Divi and what can it do?

Divi is a WordPress theme and visual page builder developed by Elegant Themes, one of the longest-running WordPress theme companies. It includes both a drag-and-drop frontend builder and a backend builder, a large library of premade layouts, a theme builder for headers, footers, and post templates, and a WooCommerce integration for custom shop layouts.

Divi has one of the largest installed bases of any WordPress page builder, with millions of active sites. It is particularly popular among small business owners and freelancers who built their first sites on it and have been maintaining them for years. Many businesses running Divi sites need a developer who understands the platform deeply - either to build something new, fix something broken, improve performance, or migrate away from it.

I have worked with Divi across 35+ projects - building sites from scratch, fixing broken layouts, resolving performance issues caused by Divi's JavaScript-heavy output, customising the WooCommerce integration, and migrating sites from Divi to Elementor or Bricks when clients need a faster, more maintainable build. I know both what Divi does well and where its limitations require a different approach.

Available to Divi clients in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe. Remote-first, async-friendly across time zones. I work remotely across time zones with async communication and deliver full documentation on every project.

Real-World Applications

What I Build with Divi

Every project ships with clean code, full testing, and clear handover documentation.

Custom Divi Websites

Full business websites built with Divi from scratch using custom layouts, a Divi child theme for persistent CSS and PHP, and a saved section library so the client can reuse styled components. Clean, consistent builds that do not fall apart after the first update.

Divi WooCommerce Stores

WooCommerce stores styled with Divi - custom shop archive layout, product page design, cart and checkout page styling, and upsell sections. Combined with caching rules that handle Divi's JavaScript output correctly alongside WooCommerce session cookies.

Divi Theme Builder Templates

Custom header and footer designs using Divi Theme Builder, single post templates for blog articles and CPT entries, archive templates for category pages and portfolio listings, and a 404 page that matches the brand. All managed in one place inside the Divi interface.

Divi Performance Optimization

Audit and fix slow Divi sites. Divi loads significant JavaScript on every page by default - enabling static CSS generation, disabling unused Divi modules, configuring a compatible caching plugin, and optimizing images typically produces a 30 to 50 percent improvement in mobile PageSpeed.

Divi Bug Fixing

Broken layouts after Divi or WordPress updates, CSS specificity conflicts with third-party plugins, JavaScript errors in the browser console, hover effects not working on mobile, sections not stacking correctly, and buttons inheriting wrong global styles from Divi's design settings.

Divi to Elementor or Bricks Migration

Full rebuild of an existing Divi site into Elementor Pro or Bricks Builder. Cleaner code output, better performance, and a more maintainable structure going forward. I handle the rebuild, redirect mapping, content migration, and a side-by-side performance comparison before handover.

Divi is powerful and has a large community, but it has real technical limitations that catch out developers who are not experienced with it. Its JavaScript output is heavy by default, its CSS specificity system can be difficult to override cleanly, and its WooCommerce integration requires specific configuration to work correctly alongside caching plugins.

The most common problem I fix on Divi sites is broken styling after an update - Divi stores layout data and custom CSS in ways that can be affected by version changes, and clients who self-update without a staging environment and proper backups regularly end up with a broken live site.

I also work with clients who have outgrown Divi. If your site has become slow, your Divi license has lapsed and you cannot update, or you need dynamic content that Divi cannot handle cleanly, a migration to Elementor or Bricks is often the right long-term decision. I handle that migration with zero downtime and a documented performance improvement.

My Commitment to You

I communicate clearly, meet deadlines, and do not disappear mid-project. If something does not work as expected, I fix it. That is why my Upwork score has stayed at 100% across 100+ projects.

Common Questions About Divi

If your question is not here, message me via the contact page or WhatsApp. I typically reply within a few hours.

Ask a Question
  • Divi is a WordPress theme and page builder plugin developed by Elegant Themes. It includes a visual drag-and-drop builder that works both on the frontend (live preview) and in a backend panel, a library of over 200 premade website layouts, a theme builder for custom headers and footers, and a WooCommerce builder for custom shop page layouts.nnDivi is one of the most widely used page builders in the WordPress ecosystem and has been available since 2013. It is sold as part of an Elegant Themes subscription that also includes the Extra theme and the Bloom and Monarch plugins. A lifetime licence costs $249 as a one-time purchase, or $89 per year for an annual subscription, covering unlimited personal and client websites.

  • Freelance Divi developer rates on Upwork range from $20 to $75 per hour. The wide range reflects the difference between someone who can assemble premade Divi layouts and someone who can build custom layouts, write Divi child theme code, fix performance issues, and handle WooCommerce integration.nnFor fixed-price work, a custom Divi landing page typically starts around $250 to $500. A full business website with custom header, footer, and five to eight pages starts from $600 to $1,400. A WooCommerce store with custom Divi templates starts from $900 to $2,000. Bug fixing and performance work is usually quoted as a fixed price after a diagnosis. I provide a clear scope and fixed quote before starting any Divi project.

  • Divi is SEO-neutral in the same way most page builders are - it does not help or hurt rankings on its own. What matters is how the site is built with it. Common SEO problems on Divi sites include incorrect heading hierarchy (Divi's text and heading modules make it easy to use H2 styling on an H1 element or vice versa), render-blocking JavaScript loading on every page, and slow page load times caused by Divi's default asset loading.nnWith a proper SEO plugin like Rank Math, correct heading structure, fast load times, and properly structured content, Divi sites rank just as well as sites built with any other page builder. The performance issue is the most important SEO factor - Divi sites that load slowly on mobile struggle with Core Web Vitals, which is a confirmed Google ranking factor.

  • Divi loads a significant amount of JavaScript on every page by default, including the full builder framework even on pages where it is not needed. This is the primary reason Divi sites score poorly on PageSpeed Insights.nnThe most effective fixes are: enable Divi's Static CSS File Generation in Theme Options to prevent inline CSS output; disable Divi modules that are not used on the site; configure a caching plugin correctly - LiteSpeed Cache or WP Rocket both work with Divi but need specific JS exclusion rules to avoid deferring scripts that Divi needs to initialise its layout; convert images to WebP format; and enable lazy loading.nnMost Divi performance issues can be resolved without changing the site's design or migrating to a different builder. If the site is using a very old version of Divi (pre-4.0) the improvement from updating alone is significant.

  • A Divi child theme is a separate theme folder that inherits Divi's functionality but stores your customizations independently. When Divi receives an update, your child theme's files are not overwritten - so any custom CSS you have added, any PHP functions you have written, and any template overrides you have created all survive the update.nnWithout a child theme, any CSS added to Divi's built-in Custom CSS field or to the theme's style.css file is wiped out when Divi updates. This is a common cause of styling disappearing after an update.nnEvery Divi site I build uses a child theme. It is a five-minute setup that prevents a very frustrating type of breakage, and it is the correct way to customise any WordPress theme.

  • Yes. Divi has a WooCommerce module that lets you build custom shop archive pages, product page layouts, and styled cart and checkout pages inside the Divi Builder. It provides more visual control over WooCommerce layouts than the default WooCommerce templates.nnThe integration requires some configuration to work correctly with caching. WooCommerce cart and checkout pages must be excluded from full-page caching, and Divi's JavaScript needs to be excluded from aggressive deferral rules that would break the checkout flow. I configure both as standard on every Divi WooCommerce build.

  • Broken Divi sites after an update are almost always caused by one of three things: a CSS conflict introduced by the update affecting a module's styling, a JavaScript conflict between the new Divi version and a third-party plugin, or a PHP compatibility issue between Divi and the WordPress version or hosting environment.nnThe diagnostic process is: restore from a pre-update backup to a staging environment, update Divi on staging and confirm the break is reproducible, then isolate whether the issue is CSS, JavaScript, or PHP by checking the browser console for errors and the server error log for PHP warnings.nnIf no backup exists, I work from the live broken site - disabling plugins one at a time to isolate conflicts and reviewing the Divi changelog for the specific update version to identify known breaking changes.

  • Migration from Divi makes sense in a few specific scenarios: your site loads slowly and Divi optimization has not resolved it, your Elegant Themes licence has lapsed and you cannot update Divi safely, you need dynamic content capabilities that Divi cannot handle (Loop Builder, ACF integration at scale), or you are rebuilding the site's design anyway and want to use a more actively developed platform.nnElementor is the right migration target if your client needs a familiar visual editor and there is a large ecosystem of widgets they rely on. Bricks Builder is the right target if performance and code quality are the priority - Bricks consistently outperforms both Divi and Elementor on Core Web Vitals.nnMigration is not always necessary. A well-optimized Divi site can perform adequately. I give an honest assessment before recommending a migration.

  • The Divi Theme is a complete WordPress theme that includes the Divi Builder as a built-in feature. When you use the Divi Theme, Divi controls the overall site structure - the header, footer, sidebar layout, and typography defaults.nnThe Divi Builder is also available as a standalone plugin, which means you can use the Divi drag-and-drop builder on page content while using a different theme to control the header, footer, and overall structure. This is sometimes used when a client wants Divi's editing experience but needs a lighter or more customisable theme wrapper.nnFor most projects, the Divi Theme with a child theme is the standard setup. The Divi Builder plugin approach is less common and can create complexity around theme builder templates for headers and footers.

  • Yes. I offer maintenance plans for Divi sites that cover Divi, WordPress core, and plugin updates tested in a staging environment before applying to the live site, monthly off-site backups, uptime monitoring, security scanning, and priority support for any issues.nnDivi updates are frequent and occasionally introduce breaking changes - particularly to module styling and the Theme Builder. Having a developer test updates before they go live on your site prevents the broken-site-after-an-update scenario that is so common on self-managed Divi installations. Contact me to discuss a maintenance plan for your Divi site.
