What is Rank Math?

What is Rank Math and what can it do?

Rank Math is a WordPress SEO plugin that handles on-page optimization, schema markup, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, redirects, local SEO, WooCommerce SEO, and technical SEO configuration from a single interface. It has grown rapidly since its 2018 launch to become one of the two dominant WordPress SEO plugins alongside Yoast, with a free plan that includes schema types and features that Yoast reserves for its premium tier.

Rank Math's key advantages over Yoast include a more generous free schema builder, a built-in 301 redirect manager, integrated Google Search Console data inside the WordPress dashboard, a more granular Content AI feature for keyword optimization, and a cleaner interface that is faster to configure across large sites.

I use Rank Math as my standard SEO plugin on all new WordPress builds and have configured it on 80+ sites. My setup process goes beyond ticking the on-page score boxes - it covers global schema for the site, page-level schema for services and FAQs, correct breadcrumb configuration, canonical management, noindex rules for thin content, WooCommerce product schema, and integration with the site's internal linking strategy. SEO setup done properly at the build stage prevents weeks of cleanup work later.

Available to clients in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe. SEO setup for sites targeting any English-speaking market. I work remotely across time zones with async communication and deliver full documentation on every project.

Real-World Applications

What I Build with Rank Math

Every project ships with clean code, full testing, and clear handover documentation.

Full Rank Math Configuration

Complete Rank Math setup from scratch on a new or existing WordPress site. Global settings, Organization or Person schema for the homepage, correct sitemap configuration, breadcrumb setup, noindex rules for thin pages, and canonical settings. Done once, correctly, as part of every site build.

Schema Markup Implementation

JSON-LD schema for every page type that benefits from rich results - FAQPage for FAQ sections, Service schema for service pages, Article for blog posts, Review and AggregateRating for testimonials, BreadcrumbList for navigation, and HowTo for tutorial content. Schema that Google actually uses for rich snippets.

WooCommerce SEO Setup

Product schema with Price, Availability, and AggregateRating. Category page meta titles and descriptions. Canonical URLs for variable product variations. Noindex on cart, checkout, and My Account. Breadcrumb configuration for product pages. XML sitemap including products and categories, excluding internal WooCommerce pages.

Technical SEO Audit and Fixes

Rank Math + Google Search Console used together to identify crawl errors, indexing issues, duplicate content from incorrect canonical settings, missing schema, pages incorrectly set to noindex, and thin content pages that should be either improved or excluded from the sitemap.

Redirect Management

Site-wide redirect setup using Rank Math's redirect manager - 301 redirects for changed URLs, 302 redirects for temporary pages, redirect chains eliminated, and redirect mapping documented. Used on site migrations, URL restructures, and after permalink changes to preserve search rankings.

Local SEO Configuration

LocalBusiness schema with name, address, phone, opening hours, and geo coordinates. NAP consistency across the site. Google Business Profile connected to Search Console. Service area or physical location set correctly in schema based on the business model. Rank Math Local SEO module configured correctly for single or multi-location businesses.

Rank Math's setup wizard walks you through the basics in fifteen minutes. The green score on every page gives the impression that SEO is sorted. Neither of those things means your site is actually set up correctly.

The most common SEO problems I find on sites that already have Rank Math installed: schema markup exists but is misconfigured and fails Google's Rich Results Test, the XML sitemap includes pagination pages and noindexed URLs that should not be in it, product variation canonical URLs are pointing to the wrong page, breadcrumb schema does not match the visual breadcrumbs on the page, and local business schema is missing the geo coordinates that Google uses for map pack rankings.

Installing and configuring are two different things. I configure Rank Math as part of every WordPress site build as a non-negotiable step, not an afterthought, and I validate the output using Google's Rich Results Test and Search Console before the site goes live.

My Commitment to You

I communicate clearly, meet deadlines, and do not disappear mid-project. If something does not work as expected, I fix it. That is why my Upwork score has stayed at 100% across 100+ projects.

Common Questions About Rank Math

Ask a Question
  • Rank Math is a WordPress plugin that handles the technical and on-page SEO configuration for a WordPress site. It manages how pages appear in search results through meta titles and descriptions, generates XML sitemaps that tell Google which pages to crawl and index, adds structured data (schema markup) so Google can display rich results like FAQ dropdowns and star ratings, handles 301 redirects when URLs change, configures breadcrumb navigation, and provides an on-page analysis tool that checks each post or page against a focus keyword.nnRank Math does not guarantee rankings. It ensures your site communicates correctly with search engines - which is a necessary foundation for ranking, not the entire strategy. Content quality, backlinks, site speed, and user experience all matter alongside technical SEO.

  • For most WordPress sites in 2026, Rank Math is the better choice. Its free plan includes schema markup types that Yoast reserves for its premium tier at $99 per year. Rank Math's redirect manager, Google Search Console integration, and local SEO module are all available free. The interface is generally faster and more informative, and the schema builder is more flexible.nnYoast remains a valid choice for sites that are already using it with a well-established configuration, for multilingual sites using WPML where Yoast's integration is more mature, and for editorial teams who prefer Yoast's simpler content analysis interface.nnMigrating from Yoast to Rank Math is straightforward - Rank Math imports all Yoast meta data during setup. I recommend Rank Math on all new builds and migrate existing Yoast sites when there is a clear benefit.

  • Schema markup is structured data added to a page's HTML that tells search engines what the content means, not just what it says. It uses the vocabulary from schema.org and is most commonly implemented as JSON-LD in the page head.nnWhen Google understands your content's structure, it can display rich results in search - FAQ dropdowns that expand below your listing, star ratings on product and review pages, event dates, recipe information, how-to steps, and breadcrumb trails. Rich results increase click-through rate significantly compared to plain blue links.nnSchema is also increasingly important for AI search. When AI overviews extract answers from web pages, they prefer content with clear structured data because it reduces ambiguity about what the page is saying. A page with correct FAQPage schema is more likely to be cited by AI search answers than an identical page without it.

  • Rank Math PRO supports over 25 schema types. The most commonly used for WordPress sites are:nnArticle and BlogPosting for blog posts and news content. FAQPage for pages with accordion-style question and answer sections. HowTo for step-by-step tutorial or instructional content. Service for service pages on business websites. LocalBusiness with subtypes like ProfessionalService, MedicalClinic, Restaurant. Product with Offer and AggregateRating for WooCommerce product pages. Review and AggregateRating for testimonial and review content. Person for about pages and individual profiles. BreadcrumbList for navigation schema. WebSite and WebPage as base schema for the site and individual pages.nnRank Math Free covers Article, BlogPosting, Recipe, Video, and a few others. Service, HowTo, and FAQPage with the full schema builder require Rank Math PRO.

  • WooCommerce SEO with Rank Math covers several specific areas:nnProduct schema - enable Product schema with Price, Currency, Availability, and AggregateRating. This allows Google to show product rich results with price and stock status in search.nnCanonical URLs for variable products - set the canonical of each product variation to the parent product URL to prevent duplicate content issues from the ?attribute= query string variations.nnNoindex rules - cart, checkout, My Account, and order tracking pages should all be set to noindex so they are excluded from the sitemap and not indexed by Google.nnBreadcrumbs - enable Rank Math breadcrumbs and replace WooCommerce's default breadcrumb with Rank Math's so the breadcrumb schema matches the visual breadcrumbs on the page.nnCategory pages - write unique meta descriptions for product category pages. Category pages often rank better than individual product pages for broad search terms.

  • An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the URLs on your site that you want search engines to crawl and index. It is submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so crawlers can find and index your content efficiently.nnIn Rank Math, enable the sitemap module and configure it to include post types and taxonomies that have indexable content - typically pages, posts, products, and main category taxonomies. Exclude post types with thin content - authors, tags with only one or two posts, WooCommerce internal pages like cart and checkout, and any CPT that contains draft or placeholder content.nnDo not include paginated URLs in the sitemap. Set a realistic last-modified date on sitemap entries by disabling the 'Include Modified Date' option if your content does not update regularly, as artificially recent dates can reduce Google's trust in the sitemap.

  • Rank Math's Local SEO module generates LocalBusiness schema that tells Google your business name, address, phone number, business type, opening hours, and geographic coordinates.nnSetup involves enabling the Local SEO module, selecting the correct LocalBusiness type (use the most specific subtype available - ProfessionalService, ITConsulting, or WebDesign rather than just LocalBusiness), entering the full address with postcode, adding the phone number in international format, setting opening hours, and entering the latitude and longitude coordinates.nnThe geo coordinates are important for local map pack rankings - Google uses them to determine which businesses are physically closest to a searcher's location. Also connect Google Business Profile to Search Console so local performance data appears in the Rank Math dashboard.

  • Rank Math includes a built-in 301 redirect manager under Rank Math > Redirections. To create a redirect, add the source URL (the old URL, relative to the domain - just /old-page/) and the destination URL (the new URL, can be relative or absolute), select the redirect type (301 for permanent, 302 for temporary), and save.nnFor bulk redirects after a URL restructure or site migration, Rank Math supports CSV import of redirect rules. Always test redirects after creating them using a browser or a tool like httpstatus.io to confirm the response code is 301 and the destination is correct.nnAvoid redirect chains where URL A redirects to URL B which redirects to URL C. Each hop loses a small amount of link equity and slows down the redirect. Point all old URLs directly to their final destination.

  • Rank Math adds a small amount of overhead but is not a significant performance concern on most sites. The main performance impact is the JSON-LD schema it injects into the page head - this is plain text and adds a few kilobytes per page, which is negligible.nnRank Math's analytics module, which pulls Google Search Console data into the WordPress dashboard, runs on a cron schedule and stores data locally - it does not impact frontend performance.nnOne area to watch is the Content AI feature, which makes API calls if enabled on the post edit screen. This runs in the admin only and does not affect frontend speed.nnOverall, Rank Math is one of the lighter full-featured SEO plugins available. It is significantly lighter than Yoast and does not load any frontend JavaScript.

  • You should not run Rank Math and Yoast simultaneously. Both plugins output meta tags and schema to the page head, and running them together results in duplicate meta descriptions, duplicate canonical tags, duplicate schema markup, and competing sitemap configurations - all of which cause problems for search engine crawlers.nnMigrating from Yoast to Rank Math is straightforward. During Rank Math's setup wizard, it detects Yoast and offers to import all meta titles, descriptions, focus keywords, noindex settings, redirects, and schema data automatically. After the import is confirmed, Yoast is deactivated. The migration takes about five minutes for most sites and preserves all existing on-page SEO work.
